Fall Fiction Writing Class Overflowing With Creative Energy

On October 14 another session of fiction writing began - bursting with creative energy and new ideas and stories from dedicated writers! We are literally filling up the new classroom which is rocking with good ideas shared by students to help each other in the writing, editing and publishing process.

Yes, it helps tremendously to have the support of a group of writers of all genres, although ultimately when the writer is at home facing the blank screen - he or she must do the writing!

I learn from my students as much as I hope I teach them about the process of writing. I still believe that writing cannot be taught - although writing can be practiced by simply writing.

One of the in class exercises is to write for 5 minutes - just write any thing that comes to mind without editing or changing the spelling, etc. It works to help cure "writer's block" and some of the students have continued to make those 5 minutes of words into a short story later.

These colorful warm autumn days inspire one to write!

As I sit on my back porch with all the beauty of autumn and my fall garden, I wish as a fiction writer I could save this day and replay it over and over. It would come in handy on a cold and rainy day but it is here to enjoy today. This is sounding poetic! There's nothing I would change or rearrange to make it more perfect - except to stretch the daylight hours and keep the sun and colors so bright!

Fiction Writing Classes Start on October 14

It's autumn and time for school, time for reading and most of all time for writing!
The muses are very active inspiring me to write and to continue teaching and motivating others to write. I will be teaching on Mondays, 10:00 a.m. - noon, at the Lincoln Center in Stevens Point, Wis. for the eighth year! The returning students keep me coming back - so I can't quit! The beauty of teaching fiction writing is that I also learn from my students. This session, October 14 - December 9, has 10 students signed/committed so far. The class size is limited to 12 so we all have time to read what we write! The first hour is devoted to one of the elements of fiction, for example: setting, character development, point-of-view, dialogue, theme/plot and climax/conclusion of the story. The second hour is open for students to read and ask for comments and constructive criticism for the short story or longer piece they are working on. See you next week! Keep reading and write on!

To Write or Not to Write?

What kind of silly idea is that to ask one who writes?  Writing is more than a hobby or lifestyle - to write is to exist, to breathe, to make a difference. A writer writes to inform and educate; to inspire and to entertain; to be heard above the noisy, chatter of uninformed people.

I write because of the pure pleasure and sound of the words as they flow from dreams. I write what I experience and feel, the words and actions of others that hurt my heart like falling on a rock. The spoken word can never be taken back. The written word is ageless and indelible as ink on parchment.

To write or not to write - that is not what a writer asks. We just write!
